Training and work for disadvantaged youth
Kilimanjaro Film Institute (KFI) trains Tanzanian youth in different disciplines of filmmaking, in order to help them gain the necessary skills to find employment. Our target group are motivated youth who might otherwise lack the financial means to develop their talents. The most sustainable and effective way to help these disadvantaged young people is by providing them with relevant training, durable jobs and means to express themselves. Training these students implies not only being able to provide them with technical skills and knowledge but, also focusing on social-, life- and creative skills. By incorporating creativity stimulation, presentation and general life skills within the training, the students learn to reflect on their own situation and culture which makes them stronger in understanding the big wide world.
Voice for the voiceless
Film, and the training required to make films, can offer youth access to the 21st century means of production, by providing entry to a universe of educational, technological and economic opportunities. Film and filmmaking breaks isolation, expands horizons, creates new skills and provides a voice to the previously unheard.
Self sustainable
KFI has started in 2007 and is still relying on external funding. But within a couple of years the institute needs to be self supportive. KFI has therefore started to make films for clients. This way senior students – who make these kind of films under the guidance of foreign film makers – get a training on the job, will learn how to work for clients and will learn what kind of films the market is asking for. And KFI at the same time earns money and becomes less and less depending on outside funding.
