The Road Map To Becoming An Independent Producer

We are proud to welcome Katinka at KFI she as remained to be a part of our big family. Katinka Wals work with RNTC as the Operations Manager in Almere Stad Area, Netherlands. RNTC is an international training institute based in the Netherlands serving media-professionals, particularly from Africa and Asia. For over 45 years RNTC has been offering focused courses tailored to the needs of (mid-career) media professionals.

kantika2Kantika has been visiting our institution for the last 2 years to share her wealth of knowledge with the students on becoming independent producers before the students graduate after 2 years intensive training cinematography and technical editing and sound in film making.


The two weeks intensive focus around starting a venture as an in depend producer, below are the topics that will be covered from 20th April 2015 to 1st May .

  1.  The golden circle
  2. Writing business plan
  3. Planning and budgeting
  4. Negotiation technique and role play
  5. SWOT analysis
  6. Team building and management
  7. Pitching / presentation
  8. Etc…

We wish all the students a successful journey in becoming independent producers who will disrupt the market with new techniques and quality productions that will map Tanzania at the global arena of film making.

Sound and Music in Film Class – Presentation

We take this opportunity to congratulate all the participants in the Sound and Music in Film class that started on 9th March and ended today.

All that starts well, ends well!

Summary; The course module covered the following;

  1. Introduction to sound; what is sound, recognizing pitch, loudness, timbre.
  2. Converting sound waves to electric signals, dynamic, condenser and ribbon microphones.
  3.  Amplifiers and loud speakers for surround and screen sound tracks.
  4. Sound recording for film, analogue sound, digital sound and Dolby sound.
  5. Sound recording required for documentary and feature films.
  6. Sound transfer and editing; sync sound with picture, linear editing and non linear editing.

Here is a video that was done by the Creative Media class in Feb 2015. This is what the participants were able to produce in a span of two weeks, isn’t that amazing?

Sound and Music in Film

This class offers the technical application of sound recording, by using the right equipments to select appropriate sound and music for any production.

Class Outcome;
Application of high quality media production and the ability to deliver and select high quality sound and music for film and documentaries.


The course module covers the following main topics;

  1. Behaviour of sound in different locations.
  2. Preparation for set sound, microphones and sound recording
  3. Recording ambiances in stereo and recognizing technical errors.
  4. Sound edit and effects.
  5. Sound design and music editing.
  6. Sound mix for film and delivery for different media

Course goals and objectives in summary;

  • How does the behaviour of sound influence recordings.
  • Listening to sound in different locations.
  • Use short vocal sounds (PAH TAH x2) to hear the reverberation in the different locations.
  • Balance between direct sound and reverb, finding the critical distance.
  •  Examples of differently framed recordings. Close up, Medium with a little background and further away, but within the critical distance, and one outside the critical distance.
  • Boom and / or lovelier microphones. When do you use what?
  • Basic sound editing in any platform, AB editing, Sound editing in Final Cut Pro
  • Telling a story with music



Chrics Tanzania Youth Leadership Camp 2014 – Video

“It was such a great pleasure and experience working with the talented young people from Kilimanjaro Film Institute during the Chrisc Youth Leadership Camp which took place last year at Oldonyosambu between 9th and 12th December 2014, in attendance were 70 youth from Tanzania and the main aim of the camp was to bring CHRISC Tanzania from Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Tanga and Manyara region for 4 days of training in leadership, engaged in various sports and to reflect on the success they have had in 2014 while they focus forward for 2015 working under a CHRISC project.”
