About Moving Tanzania

Kilimanjaro Film Institute is building a self-reliant market for documentary making and cultural storytelling in Tanzania under the project name ‘Moving Tanzania’. ‘Moving Tanzania’ host a Hub of knowledge and training for professional makers of documentaries and cultural story tellers: film makers, video directors, camera operators, editors, script writers, video journalists, etc.

One can say that the working conditions for people active in the audiovisual media are not easy. Most filmmakers, editors, directors, script writers and assistants are underpaid and there is a lack of education and a lack of equipment. Quality of the work produced in the audiovisual sector, apart from exceptions, is not high. As a result, there is little demand from the overall public. People prefer film and television from Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, India and the Western world. It is a vicious circle. By establishing the Hub, Moving Tanzania aims to improve quality of locally produced content will break this cycle. Once the output reaches a higher level, demand for Tanzanian produced film and television programs will rise.

Courses Offered:
The Hub offers three professional courses of three weeks each, full board on the premises of KFI. Out of the market research that was performed as a first step of the project, three subjects have been identified as relevant and in demand:

  1. Creative Media (Including both storytelling techniques and creative thinking).
  2. Music and Sound in Media.
  3. Entrepreneurship in the creative industry.

Creative Media:
Understand and use the principle and element of the concept format for creative storytelling

Music and Sound in Media:
An awareness of the importance of sound and music for high quality media production and an ability to deliver high quality sound design and music for film

Entrepreneurship in creative industry:
Understand and use principle and element of the business model canvas format to create and improve business.
