All aspects of film making
The first year of the curriculum is focused on basic skills; the second year on television production. In the third year students make films for clients as on-the-job training.
KFI’s curriculum combines technical, creative, social and entrepreneurial skills. Students receive training in all aspects of film making: camera, editing, sound, directing, planning, technical support, etc.

While the focus is on preparing students for success on the job, KFI also provides training in the vital areas of computers, English and life skills, which are highly beneficial in all aspects of life.

Computer
As a necessary base for the rest of the curriculum, computer classes are the first order of business when students arrive at the Institute. They are taken through a special computer programme, which gives them a solid foundation for the rest of their studies.

English
All students need to have a basic level of English to join KFI, but they are also given daily lessons for their first 6 weeks at the Institute. This is vital since they will be working with overseas visitors and need to be able to communicate clearly with them. English skills will also be a tremendous advantage in their future careers.

Life-skills
Life skills training is the most enjoyable of all lessons for our students. They love nothing more than to have a full day’s debate on love, marriage, money, politics, etc. This important part of the curriculum helps young students develop into bright, caring and responsible adults.

Training by international experts on basic technical skills (camera, edit, etc)
Several times per year professionals from United Broadcast Facilities in the Netherlands come to KFI to train the students in camera work, film editing, planning and technical maintenance. This expert training ensures that students develop strong technical skills and are familiar with the latest techniques.

Training by international experts on film- and television production
Several times per year professionals from the Dutch film- and television production company IDTV come to KFI and train the students in different aspects of film and television production. The first year IDTV trained the students in how to make the popular letter Game show Lingo. The second year IDTV made documentaries with the students. This training not only builds skills, but makes students aware of new developments in the industry. It also allows them to acquire a high level of comfort working in an international environment.

Training by international experts on television journalism
Experienced Kenyan television journalists come to KFI to train students through the making of a television series called Tazama Tanzania! The trainers are from MedevaTV and have produced Tazama Kenya for several years. They are in Tanzania to share their knowledge and experience with a new generation of television journalists. Tazama (meaning ‘watch’ or ‘observe’ in Swahili) is broadcast on TBC and features unique stories about ordinary Tanzanians told in a creative and professional manner.

Training by Dutch arts school students and staff
Several times a year senior students and staff from the Dutch arts school ‘Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht’ come to KFI and work on films with the students. With more than 3,700 students, the Utrecht School of the Arts is one of the largest arts and culture oriented institutes in Europe and our students benefit greatly from their training.

Jobs
On top of that students are well prepared to develop a career for themselves in the film and television industry. In the first year at KFI students learn the basic skills: English, computer, life skills, camera work, editing, etc. In the second year they participate in the production of a series for Tanzanian television (Tazama). And in the third year they learn to work for clients. The students get a training on the job, learn how to work for clients and learn what kind of films the market is asking for. And KFI earns some income from it and this way becomes less depending on outside funding.
